How wrong I was! I can only imagine the writing gets better, but I won’t be checking it out. This is a dreadful book in my opinion, although dqvid are entitled to their thoughts about it.

That’s why I chose the book in the first place. In he was part of an international team excavating a 5th century BC shipwreck off Turkey. I don’t know how Gibbins does it, to take a potentially exciting storyline and turn it into a shopping list of guns, bombs, helicopters and other hardware. You have been warned. I just finished book 6 featuring underwater archaeologist Jack Howard. The information has been repeated so often that, I think it hardly requires citation.
The descriptions of these things lessened the enjoyment for me – I just wanted to get on with the exciting story! We get to see him shooting down a helicopter with a gun of course he happens to know the weak spots of that particular helicopter and can adjust to the mile per hour winds so he knows just where to aim. His novel posits the idea that the lost city could be in the depths of the Black Sea, an area once lush and fertile before flooding caused the rapid evacuation of the area.

I very much liked the premise, but where the idea succeeded, the execution failed. But at least most of the technical details are right. Other books in the series. David Gibbins is an expert in his chosen field, and that expertise shines in this book.
Now, in a fascinating new novel, one man thinks that he at last can provide the answer…. It seems likely there will be significant things found preserved in that brine. Hardcoverpages. The pacing of the story is the area that some people may not like. This was somewhat disappointing, with the title I atlsntis hoping for more Atlantis stuff.
Only the mysterious intrigue of the fabled “Atlantis” kept me reading. As such, I am rating this one a 2. To begin with, Mr Gibbons may be a great professor but he hasn’t a clue about what makes a quality novel.
This novel begins with the voyages atlabtis Noah and his brother Gilgamesh, escaping the floodwaters that are drowning the ancient city of Atlantis. No trivia or quizzes atlantjs. The hero makes a lot of bad choices, both as a combatant and an archeologist.
I find underwater archaeology a fascinating subject. It hard to keep everything straight. Way too many facts that, while interesting on their own, were just not necessary for good story telling. I’m a sucker for a big idea and this The writing is pretty terrible, full of info-dumps, not all of which are relevant to the plot.
